Background
Each year, an average of 490 kilograms of waste is disposed of by Victorian households. Around 45% of this is food and green waste, most of which is compostable. A lack of composting, however, has resulted in this waste going to landfill.
To find a way to encourage composting, we should first look at what deters people from doing it. Composting often means:
- Putrid odours
- Leaking organic juices
- The chore of emptying a stinking bucket of bio-degrading fruits and vegetables
- Cleaning of waste buckets
Concept
The aim is to simplify the collection of kitchen wastes, thereby encouraging more people to compost.
The concept: a compostable reused-cardboard bin.
The user simply collects their kitchen waste in the cardboard bin, and places the bin and its contents into the household composting system. This minimises human contact with the compost material, making the composting process more pleasant. To prevent leakage, the interior of the cardboard bin is lined with a cornstarch based plastic bag, capable of fully biodegrading in 6 weeks.
